Memories of Season 96/97
|
Just watching the season review.
Was 14 back then and remember thinking that the signings of Raduciouiu and Futre would GUARANTEE at least a top six finish!
Didn't quite work.out that way but still had some great highlights.
Man U, Chelsea and Tottenham at home all stand out.
You cunts?

Futre at home to Southamton early on, sheer class, knee was fucked, obviously, which is why we had him in the first place

I remember Futre sliding a ball through for Hughes (i think) and thought he'd over hit it to get it past the defender only to find he put backspin on it to fall directly into Hughes path. It was like watching the perfect Snooker shot he was unreal at times.

Think we sold Cottee at the start of that season to a club in Malaysia! Never understood that one, especially as he came back to Leicester City and carried on banging the goals in.

Was the Wrexham game in the snow same season. He Equalised but you couldn't really see the ball go in because of the fog.

Remember going out to Wrexham in the cup at UP in Feb 97 I think? Fans all stormed the pitch afterwards protesting to oust the board, but went over to the Wrexham fans to applaud them.

I remember thinking Danny Williamson was going to play for England. Scored a cracking goal at Bolton when we won 3-0

Dean Saunders about 3 years earlier would have been a superb signing. Although a paired relationship with Dowie might not have been his perfect foil.
We were probably linked with Dean Holdsworth every week back then too.

I remember reading in SHOOT that we had signed Dean SAUNDERS.
I was not happy and put me in a bad mood for the duration of my paper round that evening.

Was this the season we lost 0-1 at home to Wrexham in the FA Cup 3rd round and Harry Redknapp offered his resignation?

Remember playing Cricket and one of me team mates saying West Ham had signed Futre'... called him a liar until I got home and looked on teletext... one of the world greats at West Ham?? Couldn't believe it and knew it was too good to be true (ie the injury)... but for a few short months the light burned brightly

Done every game this season, the season before and the season after.
Was largely DEPRESSING until we made the signings.

Cut straight from my profile...
After beating Sheff Wed 5-1 back in 1997, my brother, my Dad and I, having spent an hour in the 66 club getting pissed with David Essex, ran onto the pitch to re-create our favourite moments in front of the (old) North Bank. My brother re-inacted the statuesque defending of Colin Foster, I slowly trudged back onside pulling a pained expression a la Iain Dowie and the old man walked, head bowed and in tears, towards the tunnel like a young Allen McKnight.
